The Parish of the English Martyrs, Tuffley

The Parish of St Augustine of Canterbury, Matson

The Solemnity of the Lord’s Ascension in 2009 brought together our parishes under the pastoral care of one Parish Priest, Fr Gerry Walsh (Parish Priest for both St Augustine and English Martyrs).

The parishes cover a considerable portion of the City of Gloucester including Barnwood south of Hucclecote Road, extensive areas to the east of the main railway line and areas spreading to the south of Tuffley Avenue. These include Eastern Avenue, Chequers Road , the southern part of Barnwood, Coney Hill, Abbeymead, Abbeydale, Saintbridge, Robinswood, Stroud Road, Finlay Road, Podsmead, Linden, Kingsway and Tuffley. Further out still lie the villages of Quedgeley, Hardwicke, Elmore, Longney, Haresfield, Upton St Leonards, Harescombe, Brookthorpe and Whaddon together with parts of Edge, Standish, Epney and Moreton Valance.

In the very heart of our parish we find Robinswood Hill, a country park, which rises to 650 feet and is a Jurassic outlier of the Cotswold Hills. It is our most prominent landmark and can be seen from the homes of many of our parishioners. Geographically this hill binds the Catholic Parishes of Tuffley and Matson together and has given us a new name.
